He is saved by the lady owner of a brothel and she along with Kiran takes care of him. Chottu (Cochin Haneefa), a local goon belonging to Bakhia gang, attacks Hari and beats him up mercilessly. In midst of the celebration, Hari enters the house of Abbas Ali and shoots him down, inviting the enmity of Amar Bakhia. Abbas, after coming to know about the small scale smuggling activities of Hari and gang, threatens him and asks him to come and meet him on the day of Vinayak Chathurthi and pay him a large amount as fine. With the death of Mudaliar, Amar Bakia becomes the undisputed don of the city, and Abbas Ali, his lieutenant. One of the friends, Shekhar (Shankar), falls in love with the sister of Mani, without the knowledge of anyone else.On a fine morning, Mudaliar, the Tamilian don, who was ruling the street is shot dead by Abbas Ali (Rami Reddy), his own henchman, who has shifted his loyalty to Amar Bakia (Mahesh Anand), another cold blooded don. In a short attempt to make money, Hari and friends start making local hooch, which is supplied by Manikandan (Jagadish), their friend, who is also a taxi driver. He accidentally meets Kiran (Geetha), a Telugu girl in the brothel, for whom he develops feelings. Hari and his friends stay at a room in Kamathipura, which also homes the largest red lighted area in India.
The film begins with Harikrishnan witnessing the murder of a journalist, and being asked by police to appear at an identification parade, which he does. He shares a room with a group of Malayali guys, who have their own personal problems and difficulties. Harikrishnan (Mohanlal) is an immigrant in Mumbai, who like many thousands of immigrants is busy struggling to make ends meet. Even though selfish and unkind outside, the good-hearted Hareendran cannot stand the harsh difficulties forced to be faced by the girls in front of his house and rest of the story is about how only Hareendran (Oral Mathram - the only person) steps up to help the girls.
Hareendran the selfish tenant quickly decides to vacate the house to avoid unwanted troubles. But the things take a change after Menon goes absconding leaving three daughters alone in the house. His experience with Balachandran has made Hareendran a selfish man and he presently is least concerned about other people's problems around him. Hareendran is constantly put under unwanted troubles by his aide Balachandran (Sudheesh), who convinces Hareendran to help people in trouble. Hareendran (Mammootty) is a struggling small-time contractor and comes in as a new tenant to the rented house. Menon's Pension from service has been blocked due to some unclear issues. Menon owns a smaller house adjacent to his own which is given for rent, and his source of income other than agricultural income. He owns some land and a house where he and his three daughters live together and lead a calm, silent and happy life. Shekhara Menon (Thilakan) is retired income tax officer from Mumbai and has now settled in a remote village in Kerala.
